Do You Need Custom Curtains or Draperies?
September 6, 2017
When it comes to home decor, window treatments play a variety of roles. They can give a room a focal point, give privacy and light control and in some cases help with energy efficiency. If you’re planning to add draperies or curtains in your home, there are a few things to take into consideration. While ready-made curtains and draperies are less ex-pensive initially and you can take them home immediately, there are other things to take into account before you buy curtains from your local department or big box store.
There is no longer a “standard” sized window as there were decades ago. According to Simonton Window and Doors, new home builders and home renovation experts, custom windows are best for the comfort and safety of homes. While there are still “common” window sizes that are used by homebuilders, using custom windows lowers the chance of having gaps that let in unwanted air and moisture. What does that mean for buying window treatments? It means you’ll have to measure. If your window is floor to ceiling, is arched or is unique in any way, the ready-made options you’re presented with at the store probably won’t give you the look you want.
Help from the Experts
When you purchase off the shelf ready-made curtains, you’ll have to measure your windows to ensure the right length, fit, and proportions, as well as decide on the right fabric for your privacy, light blocking and home decor needs. You’ll also have to choose the necessary new hardware, keeping in mind the weight of the curtains or draperies, the style and finish of hardware that will best complement your style and ex-isting hardware in the room. Lastly, you’ll have to install them yourself. By working with a professional designer, a consultant will come to your home and work with you to de-cide what will work best for you and your home. You’ll have someone with experience help you decide on the best fabrics, colors and hardware. Even more importantly, you’ll have someone to do the measuring for you, while keeping your ideas and the look you want to accomplish with your new window treatments in mind. They’ll also come out and install the new custom curtains or draperies for you, making the whole experience, from start to finish, stress free.
The quality of a ready-made window treatment will almost never match the quality of a custom-made curtain or drape. Ready-made curtains are made in factories where speed and quantity of production is more important than quality. They usually don’t have the fullness that a custom window treatment does and it’s hard to get them to hang properly. Ready-made curtains and draperies usually lack a lining. The lining protects the fabric of the curtain or drapery from the sun, which will make it deteriorate over time. A lining is also important, especially in bedrooms and living rooms, because it helps to block out light.
Custom curtains and drapes are made to order, specifically for your window. Most custom made window treatments use an interlining that not only helps protect them from the sun and blocks light, but helps the custom window treatment to have a fuller, more pleasing appearance. Custom window treatments will be the perfect length and width and hang just the way it should.
